MCR go bye-bye.
So, if you've seen my post, you already know this. But the details...
I've sent email requesting that the station be shut down effective at the end of this billing cycle. That means the station will still exist until September 4th, if anyone wants to do a final show or two. :)

MCR - To be, or not to be?
I'm sure most of you have noticed that I haven't been on the air for the past few months. Between wedding stuff, moving, and real-life stuff in general, I just haven't had much chance or desire to broadcast. And now, I'm finding that I just don't really have the desire to go back to it.
What does that mean for the station? Well, for starters, I'm paying $23.96 per month for something that I don't use. I can't really continue to justify that in my budget.
So, the breakdown.....if anyone is interested in taking over the station, please let me know ASAP. If nobody takes it over before the next billing cycle (September 4th is when they charge me for the station), I'm going to simply let it be shut down.
It's been fun, and I might want to do an occasional show in the future, but for right now I'm just not into it.

As you might know, my computer's been dead since about Monday, the good news is that i'll be getting a new computer which I should be ordering today or tomorrow, the bad news is that the computer'll take 1 to 2 weeks to get here, so I doubt i'll be doing another show untill around the 4th of July. I'm hoping to do a special show whenever I get set back up.
By the way Arjay: this one'll be about 6 times faster than my old one, so quit bugging me!

My computer screwed up this week. Windows blue screens all the time even though we reinstalled it. I'm now running on Linux, does anyone know if it's possible to run the show on Linux? if so, what do I need? Thanks!

I think I'm going to move my show to Fridays permanently. I don't know when I will get back to broadcasting regularly, but Fridays work out much better for me than Sundays at this point. We do have an impending move in about a month and a half, so probably won't start broadcasting regularly until June, but may do a show here and there on Fridays between now and then.
Robert's not sure when he's going back to doing his show either. We got busy with wedding stuff and now we're going to be moving, but we'll keep everyone posted. Jason, please go ahead and update the station info with my show on Fridays again. I have a promo for Fridays (it's my old one) that I can send out to people when I start broadcasting more regularly if they don't still have it.

Currently it says the server's active and the songs are showing up on the MCR web page, but the live365 page says the station's not on the air, I don't know what to do.

A word to the wise...
Shoutcast appears to be at least partially responsible for the problems many of us have been having with ID3 tags. Everyone will have to switch over from Shoutcast to SAM if you plan to keep broadcasting. It appears Shoutcast is not uploading all of the required track information to Live365. Right now we've got numerous violations listed and I know many of those tracks on Jason's computer which are listed as violations had proper tags for a FACT because he used the same program to make them that I use, and I made many of my mp3's from my CD's on his computer before I got this new one.
I'm running a test from SAM and all of the information appears to be uploading. Jason was using Shoutcast and the album information was missing for his entire show. If you're not sure how to do it, Robert and I both use it and can probably help walk people through it. Shoutcast is apparently also not uploading track times properly. So, as of now everyone needs to plan on learning to use SAM for broadcasting.
SAM is not that hard to use, but you need to make SURE you wear headphones so that you can adjust levels properly. Once you get used to it, it's very easy to use. Also, if you plan to do a live broadcast that runs longer that 4 hours, SAM resets itself. SAM also resets itself after encoding 4 hours if you don't turn it off between uses. In other words, when you're done you need to go back into preferences and turn the encoder off when you aren't broadcasting. You can set SAM up so that it actually records your entire broadcast automatically while it's encoding. We can help you with that too.
If you continue to broadcast, you must use proper tags. This includes Artist, Album and Song Title. Make sure all your mp3's have proper tags. Spend a little extra time checking that out when you're setting up your playlists. It's not difficult to do, and it's less of a pain in the ass than having the violations because currently, MCR can't be listed in the live365 directory since they have cracked down. We'd like to see that change. For station promos ID/PSA must go in the album AND the artist fields. You can edit them in winamp by right clicking on the track name and highlighting where it says file info. It doesn't look like it matters whether you put all of the information in ID3v1 or ID3v2 just as long as all the information is in one or the other. It's easy enough to copy so it's in both.
SAM encoders are on the MCR website. Everyone may want to download it and start messing around with it. SHITcast doesn't seem to be working and it's really not worth all the hassle with broadcasting. (This is part of the reason I was getting burnt out and I'm sure there might be others who feel the same way, but if you WANT to start broadcasting, learn SAM. It's not too tough.) Hey now that I figured out the problem is I actually feel accomplished. Not that that means I'm in any huge hurry to do a show again. But hopefully this will help keep someone else from feeling burnt out or frustrated.
Something that should make many of you feel a little better... if you used CDex for making your mp3's that does a pretty good job at storing all the track info and putting it in the proper places. :)

i'm looking at the schedule, friday's free, right? I'll assume it is and have my show then, if it's not, please tell me.

I'm a bit busy tonight, what days are free this week, tues & fri?
Compliance....the answer, finally!
I know I've emailed this to some of you, but others of you, I don't have email addys for at work, so I'm posting this here too.
To remain compliant, we need to all select certain music that we will ALWAYS use for breaks, ID's, etc., and put the following in the ID3 tags:
Title: [whatever.....I usually put "SHHHHH! Arjay's Talking!"]
And that will cause the "Compliance Filter" on Live365 to ignore those tracks.
No, you may not use that on tracks that you just don't know the information on.....use Allmusic.com
to look it up.
As much as possible, please use music that you have either purchased the CD for, or legally downloaded tracks.

For those of you having trouble with AOL running sound ads while broadcasting, I might have accidentally found a solution (I think.) I installed Adaware (it's free, google for it and download it from the pcworld mirror site that comes up in the search.) Now, there is no ad window on AIM at all for me. AIM still works, but the ad window is just grey and no ads come up. Running Adaware is the only change I've made recently so I'm guessing that's what got rid of the ads. No more stupid crap coming up through my sound card in the middle of broadcasting. Of course, Robert ran it and he didn't work for him. He's running Win2K and I am running XP so maybe that makes a difference. But anyhow, try it if you're having trouble. It can't hurt.

Any objections to my doing a show on Friday night this week instead of Sunday night? Robert's birthday is Sunday and we will be at his parents' house. Please let me know if there are any objections. I am thinking of doing an all Christmas show this time.
Wednesday, November 16th, 2005
Due to an internet outage at home, there will be no Lakeside Approach tonight.
Friday, October 28th, 2005
Any objections if I take the 8-10 slot on Sunday this week, since Laura's going to be working that night?
Wednesday, October 19th, 2005
I am considering doing my next two shows on the next two Friday nights as I have things going on both of the next two Sundays. This week is the Ren Faire and we may not be home in time, and next week I have to work. Are there any objections?

I need to move my show to Thurs night this week. Since it is a class night, I'm also starting at 9pm Central. Possibility of earlier but it would just be extended preshow if so. We have a test on Tuesday so I'm sure we'll go until 8:20. That lets me get home and fire up the server.
